Producing a video without having a more extensive marketing plan is one of the biggest errors in video marketing. If done well, video can be a very effective marketing tool. Remember, your video is a reflection of your own brand. In order to help you get started with a video marketing strategy, we have shared a few tips on how to avoid making the most common mistakes.

Mistakes To Avoid:

1. Calling in quotes from every video agency you can find.

This is a huge waste of time— yours and theirs. Get quotes from three agencies and compare those.

2. Going out for bid without creative.

If you want to set a realistic budget you need to spend the time and money to develop great creative.

3. Getting quotes before setting a budget.

Asking a video agency to quote a project without giving them an indication of the ballpark figure means you’ll never be able to compare quotes. Most agencies will curb their creativity to provide the lowest possible price.

4. Making your video too long.

Studies show that people click away from a video within the first 10 seconds if it isn’t engaging. The more time you add to a video, the more likely it is that people aren’t going to finish the video. Keep it short and sweet, 60 – 90 seconds is the perfect amount of time.

5. Incorrect branding.

If they can’t remember the name of your company it defeats the entire purpose of the video. Make sure to brand your video with the logo, website URL etc.

6. Focussing on multiple messages in one video.

Delivering too many messages will probably mean that the consumer hasn’t actually consumed any of the information. Deliver a single message so that your viewers can take that one message away with them.

7. Making the video a sales pitch.

A lot of people make the mistake of selling their product or service in the video. The video should entertain and inform the audience and help move the buyer along. Buyers want the telling process to seem organic. A sales pitch will make them turn off the video.

8. Not making your video mobile-friendly.

A lot of the time, businesses overlook the need to optimize their video for mobile usage. More and more consumers watch videos on their mobile devices, so it is important to create mobile-friendly videos (no one will watch a 12-minute video about the CEO on their phone, but they will watch a 1-minute how-to video.

9. Making a video for the sake of it.

What is the purpose of your video? If you can’t answer that question then you need to take a step back and think about why you are in fact making it. Does it serve a higher strategic purpose? Approach video as you would any other marketing campaign.

10. Expecting immediate results.

You need to understand that a successful video marketing strategy requires patience, consistency, and dedication. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, so don’t expect results overnight.
